Spanish

Spanish

The intent of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) programme at Devonshire is to provide a real, immersive and purposeful experience to the children in our community. We want our pupils to foster a natural curiosity to explore many languages and cultures and to appreciate the benefits that language learning has for individuals and society.

Children learning an MFL at our school are immersed in a skills-based and progressive sequence of lessons. All children have the opportunity to listen to authentic speakers and practise speaking Spanish regularly. Teachers use a variety of techniques including games, songs, stories and rhymes to help them remember key vocabulary. Children in our school have the aptitude to immerse themselves in an additional language – indeed many are already bi-lingual – therefore providing them with the opportunity to learn Spanish enables them to explore language across cultures. Speaking, listening, reading and writing Spanish is taught in an inclusive manner so that all children are successful. Children are given the opportunity to build their vocabulary and grammar and this builds in complexity across the key stage to prepare them for the next stage of their learning in KS3.

Above all, we want to give our pupils a love of language learning that will bring opportunities for greater personal development as well as wider cultural, educational and employment opportunities in the future.
